Why won't sharks attack lawyers?... Professional courtesy. Yeah yeah yeah. Blah blah blah. After nearly 18 years of practice, you probably can't tell me a lawyer joke I haven't heard. I don't get offended by them but, for the most part, I don't find them laugh out loud funny, either.

I love the vintage sunbathers diving across this Emily & Finn dress from ModCloth. |
I've never really bought in to "lawyer" stereotypes. I deal with other lawyers nearly every day, both as colleagues and adversaries. Of course there are some sharks out there, but that's because some people are just jerks, not because they're lawyers. In general, we are actually a pretty collegial profession.

A simple rope bracelet with a brass anchor clasp is a fun nautical accent. This one is from Kiel James Patrick. |
And as shocking as it may be, we don't all wear navy blue suits and sensible black pumps to the office every day either. "...But you don't look like a lawyer!" is a refrain I hear a lot. Guess what? I'm okay with that. Donning the expected "attorney attire" doesn't make my legal counsel any more sound or well informed.

The gold necklace with striped gros grain ribbon was a bargain find from Burlington Coat Factory. |
Thankfully, after nearly 18 years of practice, my clients know that, too. In fact, one of the best compliments I've ever received came from a long-time client and senior vice-president of a Fortune 500 company, who told me he appreciates that I always "smile with my clothes" even though I'm so serious about my job.

The nautical striped wedges are from Zulily. |
The comment really resonated with me. I do like to smile with my clothes. But don't let the sundress full of vintage sunbathers fool you, I will swim with the sharks whenever I need to!
